The fund will invest in all sectors of the Cambodian and Lao economies, but will focus on SMEs with best practice-oriented management teams and promising growth perspectives. For example, the fund has already closed investments into a plush toy manufacturing company in Cambodia, as well as in a mobile broadband internet service provider in Laos. Through its investments, the fund is expected to improve the overall competitiveness of the Cambodian and Lao economies.
The Cambodian and Lao risk capital markets are still at very early stages of development. SIFEM’s investment in the fund is thus expected to support the sustainable development of these markets, expand the availability of risk capital for entrepreneurial ventures, and support long-term economic development of Cambodia and Laos.
The fund is managed by Emerging Markets Investments (EMI), and local first-time fund manager having emerged from a private sector development consultancy group. With their knowledge of the Cambodian and Lao SME sectors and their consultancy experience, the fund management team is well placed to support investee companies on the growth path.
